The Influence Strategy
The COVA learning approach greatly alters how one approaches their learning journey. “Applied Digital Learning (ADL) at Lamar University is a collaborative learner-centered program that embraces technological innovation through collaboration and active and authentic learning that will prepare learners to create meaningful change” (Harapnuik, 2022, para.1). With ADL being centered around the COVA model of learning, learners will immediately feel a since of autonomy regarding how they learn, greatly differentiating from a traditional learning model. “In the ADL program, the learner will not be asked to just learn the theory or sit and get professional development but will be required to go and show what they have learned through the creation of their own authentic projects” (Harapnuik, 2022, para. 7). The COVA learning model challenges learners to truly personalize how they learn, by utilizing this model learners have the opportunity to fully maximize their innovative capabilities.
The COVA model is and should appealing to all learners. All learners are not created equal, we all have our own set of strengths and weaknesses that dictate how we learn, utilizing the COVA model allows us to custom build our own learning model to best fit us. One of the biggest issues with didactic models of teaching is that they take a one size fits all approach to learning, which boxes learners in and in many cases creates a disconnect between learner and learning. “Innovative technologies are used as catalysts to enhance learning and when effectively employed, the technology disappears into the learning environment” (Harapnuik, 2022, para. 2).
The COVA approach is a very important and affective way to enhance how we learn, however this innovative model of learning is not without its challenges. Many of us have been taught throughout our lives, utilizing a didactic model of learning and now to have access to such a new and unrestricted style of learning, it can be overwhelming for many. For me, I feel that the ownership portion is the most challenging. One of the main focuses of COVA, is making learning your own. Though this type of freedom may come with a difficult adjustment period, in the end, the reward outweighs the difficulties.
When utilizing COVA, you gain an increased since of urgency in your learning journey. A big reason for this, is the autonomy that you have over your learning, gone is the days where you are just fed information. With greater opportunity, comes greater responsibility in how you learn, what you learn and why you’re learning what you’re learning, this lens itself to facilitating a learner’s mindset within us. I feel that has certainly been the case with me, in my learning journey dealing with the COVA model of learning. As I continue my learning journey, I feel that I’ve only touched the surface of where I can take my learning, in the future, I want to challenge myself to be more opportunistic in gathering learning experience from a variety of entities.
